Leadership isn't just about guiding others in the workplace. It's also about leading the battles within you. It’s about choosing whether your mind will be your enemy or your friend and how to control your mind to work in your best interest. Self-leadership is a crucial aspect of personal development and growth.
Have you ever heard that voice in your head – “You are not good enough,” “You are not strong enough,” “You will fail,” or “Why are you taking this risk.” This voice shows up whenever you are about to take a risk or change your life. We think this voice is telling us the truth about ourselves, but it is not. It is our survival brain talking to us, which was trained to protect us from life-threatening events, but it gets triggered at any point we face any stress.
There are many approaches to changing the messaging our survival brain gives us by activating the thriving brain. In my post today, I will discuss one specific way.
1) Be aware when you are getting triggered –
When you are stressed or overwhelmed or react to a situation negatively, stop and take a step back.
2) Identify what is causing the trigger – close your eyes, take deep breaths, or go for a walk, whatever works best for you. Always remember that thoughts lead to feelings, and feelings lead to actions.
3) Listen to your mind as to what it is telling you about the situation and yourself
Is it positive or negative?
Is it telling you the truth?
Is it serving you?
4) Recognize the lie and call it out. Writing it helps the most. Keeping it all in your brain creates a vicious circle of repetitive thoughts; that’s why writing always brings clarity
5) What will you tell your best friend in this situation? Why are you being so hard on yourself? Will it matter in a few weeks?
6) Be empathetic to yourself and others in the situation --> Explore what are the possible solutions --> Look at the choices in front of you and choose the one aligned with your values --> Take action
Initially, it will seem like a long process, but with practice, you will become more and more aware of your triggers and how you are reacting (surviving brain) to those instead of responding (thriving brain)
As you exercise to have a healthy body, you must exercise to have a healthy mindset.
Train your mind to make healthier choices.
